People are helping Princess Bokon put on her Hwalot. Princess Bokon was born as the second daughter of Sunjo in 1818 and is the younger sister of Crown Prince Hyomyeong(aka Ikjong). The Hwalot costume is thought by historians to have been worn when she performed the haga ceremony to Byungju Kim.
The royal red robe with embroidered patterns and gilt looks elegant even from the back. It shows seven types of flowers and grass patterns, two types of fruit trees, twelve types of treadured patterns, and palbomoon, which represents both Buddhism and Taoism. The dress was at first an exclusive luxury for the upper class, but started to become worn as a wedding gown by common citizens.
